New Year, New Victories for Workers in Some States

In some states, low wage employees have a little something extra to celebrate today.

First off in Washington, minimum wage is getting a $0.50 bump, and the state is also instituting, as of tomorrow, a new law which will require most employers to provide paid sick leave to full-time, part-time, and temporary employees, at a rate of one hour accrued for every forty hours worked.

Over on the eastern seaboard, New York is also raising minimum wage, as well as enacting a new paid family leave law, effective today.  The law will enable both full-time and part-time employees to take 8 weeks (to be phased up to 12 weeks by 2021) of leave, being paid at half their average weekly wage, in order to care for a newborn or adopted child, or a sick relative.

In addition to New York and Washington, 16 other states will see minimum wage increases in 2018.

Tonight, pop a cork for the small victories and raise a glass for some bigger ones in 2018!
